What If There’s More to You Than You Think?

There Is More to You

My name is Bankole Great-Gain, formally known as G.b.flex.

Growing up, it felt like God was unfair to me.

I saw myself in a situation where I believed I couldn’t become anything or achieve anything in life.

It got so bad that I would carry a knife, thinking of harming myself.

Why?

Because I felt like I was nothing.

The Weight of Feeling Empty

People would always ask me:

“What’s your talent?”
“What’s your gift?”
“What skills do you have?”

And my answer was always the same:

Nothing.

That belief stayed with me for a long time.

Until a moment came where I had to ask myself a different question:

“Is there really nothing in me?”

So I started trying.

I put my hands into different things — not anything bad, but anything that could help me discover myself.

The First Step Into Something New

I was in the hostel with my brother when we had an idea.

We decided to do a spoken word presentation in church.

The first time we performed, nothing happened.

No encouragement.
No recognition.

It felt like it didn’t matter.

We almost lost interest.

But because of God, we decided to try again.

The Second Try That Changed Everything

The second time we performed, something unexpected happened.

Two different ministries reached out to us.

They wanted us to do what we had just done.

We couldn’t believe it.

At that moment, I realized something important:

Don’t do things for people to notice you.
Do it for God.

Because with God, there is honor and lifting.

My Struggle With Academics

My academic life was another challenge.

In secondary school, I was constantly made to feel like I was empty.

Teachers made it obvious.

And that led to low self-esteem.

Low self-esteem is dangerous.

It changes how you see yourself.

It makes you feel small.
It makes you feel like you are not enough.

I truly believed I couldn’t achieve anything.

Stepping Into Leadership

When I got into university, that mindset followed me.

I still felt like nothing.

I never had plans to go for any leadership position.

But something happened.

My brother contested for SRC President.

He campaigned.

But he lost.

And in that moment, I said to myself:

“The name Bankole cannot go down like this.”

People needed to know us for something different.

So I made a decision.

I applied for the position of Academic Director.

It was a risk.

People kept asking me:

“Won’t this affect your academics?”

But I stepped in anyway.

Trying Something I Never Expected

Another area I explored was content creation.

It wasn’t something I ever imagined myself doing.

But I remembered something about myself:

I like trying different things.

So I started creating content.

Not because I had it all figured out.

But because I wanted to build and support young creators.

I’m still growing in it.

But I’ve started.

What I’ve Come to Realize

There is something you need to understand:

Becoming something starts from starting something.

You cannot become anything if you never try.

I also realized something else:

You can be who you want to be — if your mind is ready for it.

The Truth I Want You to Hold On To

The whole message is simple:

There is more to you.

More than your current situation.
More than what people say about you.
More than what you think about yourself.

Keep Going

You just have to:

  • Try
  • Keep trying
  • Refuse to give up

People will talk.

But their words do not define your destination.

Don’t let people’s opinions bring you down.

Final Words

What you are doing right now might not look like much.

It might not look like headlines yet.

But listen carefully:

It is history in the making.
