What If That Thing You Loved as a Child Is Actually Your Purpose?
From playing football as a young girl to becoming a sports leader, Okut Daniela shares her journey of discovering purpose through passion, overcoming fear, and growing into leadership step by step.
My Story — From Just Playing Ball to Leading in Sports
My name is Okudu Daniella, a 200-level Microbiology student.
First, I want to appreciate my parents for their support, prayers, and belief in me — especially during times when things didn’t make sense.
I’m also grateful to my best friend, my secondary school teachers, and everyone who gave me the opportunity to grow, learn, and step into leadership early.
Where It All Started
From a young age, there were two things I loved:
- Playing ball
- Leadership
But at that time, especially in primary school, it didn’t feel serious.
It just felt like something I enjoyed.
When It Started Becoming Real
When I got to secondary school, things began to change.
One day, while I was just playing casually, a coach noticed me.
He asked me a simple question:
“Why didn’t you register?”
That moment changed something.
I registered.
And from there, I started training properly.
I even had a school mother — Michelle — who helped guide and train me.
Slowly, I started improving.
I went from just playing for fun to actually becoming part of something bigger.
My First Real Challenge
There was a time we had an inter-school match.
Different schools came together to compete.
At that time, I wasn’t very confident.
I wasn’t even that tall, and I was going to play against stronger and older players.
I remember telling my coach:
“I’m scared.”
But I was told to try.
So I did.
During the match, I got injured early.
I ran out.
Honestly, I wanted to stop.
But something inside me changed.
I felt this push:
“You have to go back.”
And I did.
From that moment, I started playing differently.
With more confidence.
With more determination.
Discovering Something Bigger
When I entered SS1, something became clear to me.
I didn’t just love sports.
I had a deep passion for it.
It wasn’t just about playing anymore.
It was about:
- Leadership
- Organization
- Bringing people together
While others saw sports as just an activity…
I saw a future.
Stepping Into Leadership
In SS1, I decided to contest for Sports Director (Female).
I was scared.
I didn’t think I would win.
But I told myself:
“If I don’t try, I won’t know.”
So I went for it.
And that decision changed everything.
From SS1 to SS3, I served as Sports Director.
Holding On to the Dream
Even after secondary school, that dream didn’t stop.
When I got to university, I already knew:
This is something I want to continue.
At first, I wasn’t sure how it would play out.
But I kept showing up.
And eventually…
I became the Sports Director of my department (Microbiology).
Still Growing
Right now, I am still learning.
Still growing.
Still pushing myself every day to become the person I imagined when I first discovered this passion.
What I’ve Learned
Looking back, I’ve realized something important:
Passion reveals purpose.
That thing you love, the thing that feels natural to you…
It might be more than just interest.
It might be direction.
Final Words
This is no longer just a dream for me.
It is a goal.
And I am determined to achieve it.
No matter how long it takes.
